I was reading about the article recently, and it struck me as odd that the school was for girls only. You would think, that she would want to open up a school for everyone to have the opportunity to have an education. Am I the only one confused by this? Or is there something I am not aware of?

She believes that by helping girls become leaders, then they can change their country. Girls become women who raise families. Educated women raise children who will also (hopefully) be educated, even if only by their mother. Then you can only hope that those children will do the same for their children and so on.
Oprah is opening a school for boys and girls in a different part of South Africa.

Oprah is helping build schools in Africa because Africa is the poorest continent on the planet. Education gives people a chance to lift themselves out of poverty. Also, Oprah can trace her roots back to Africa and she also choose South Africa as a tribute to Nelson Mandela.

I'm not always the biggest fan of Oprah (sometimes it's easy to see that "it's all about her"), HOWEVER, she has donated millions of dollars to charity, has built numerous homes for Katrina victims (using donations & her own dollars), and has sponsored college education for many American children, both black and white.

I find it very hard to believe a school cost that much and is necessary in that country. Frankly I am disappointed she hasn't chosen to help the children in this country. Especially given the fact the show she ran after the "new school" was about the unforgiving poverty hidden in this country. It's gotta be at least as much about tax shelter as it has to do with kids and why can't boys go too. I'm sure there are boys whose families are affected by HIV also (this is her reasoning for opening the school for girls) I've always been suspicious of charities in other countries. Especially those promoted on TV. Feed a child, adopt a child etc. We have a great need in this country also. I apreciate her efforts but am disappointed in her direction.

Oprah is one of the first African American WOMEN to make it. Of course she is going to try to help other girls make it, too.

the whole thing is off. Oprah is black when its convenient and white when its convenient also. She only opens schools in africa and doesnt help out in her own country. She is not as generous as everyone thinks she is.

Oprah is so sickly sweet that I'd like to vomit all over her.
