For an academic paper is it underlined, in italics, or what?

Use italics--just as with a full length novel. If you are referring to a TV show, same thing--but the title of an individual episode would go in "double quotes."

The best source for this kind of stuff is Kate Turabian's Chicago Manual of Style (any bookstore or librarian will know what you mean if you ask).

underlined.....quotes are done in quotes...any title should be underlined and never italicized for the purpose of what you are doing
