a balanced equation is where there are the same amount of atoms on both sides of the equation. they need to be balanced because the equation wouldn't obey the law of conservation of matter.

the law of conservation of matter states: matter can not be created or destroyed, only changed.

A symbolic representation of a chemical reaction in which both sides of the equation contain equivalent numbers of atoms of each element. Charge and mass are both conserved in a balanced equation.

Law of conservation of matter
Matter may be neither created nor destroyed. A piece of matter may under go a CHANGE OF PHASE or may react chemically either within itself or with other matter, so it may not be recognizable in the same form, but the amount of matter does not change.

Equations need to be balanced to comply law of conservation of matter.

The law of conservation of matter states that you can not create or destroy matter.
An equation must be balanced to keep the law of conservation of matter.
You must have the same kind and number of atoms on each side of the arrow.

The Law of Conservation of matter is the reason equations need to be balanced, because the Law states that matter can nether be created or destroyed. Which means, for example, if Hydrogen,H, gas and Oxygen,O, gas form water,H2O,in the gas form. All the hydrogen reacted is in the used in the reaction, and all the oxygen reacted is used in the reaction.

Ex.) H2+O2=H2O unbalanced
H2+O2=2H2O still unbalanced
2H2+O2=2H2O Balanced ;)
or H2+1/2O2=H2O Balanced ;)

Also you have to realize, like in this equation, that some elements are diatomic, they bond in twos, like H2 O2 , for more stability.
