I'm painting a picture of a dog and a cat and a bunch of oranges (I know it sounds stupid but its gonna be cool I promise) anyway id like the background to be one solid color and the oranges to be really bright and I want them to stand out.

The problem is I think black is the best way to stand the oranges out BUT the cat is black and I don't want him to disappear into the background.

So what other color would make orange really stand out?

Blue - buggy's answer is right but she phrased it incorrectly. Blue and Orange are complementary colors - meaning they are opposites. When you put two complementary colors together they make them bolder and stand out more. That's an artist's tool for making specific focal points in paintings stand out more. Use the link below for reference (or google "color wheel" and check one out) - look for a color near your oranges and look to the opposite side of the color wheel to see what color is it's complementary color - and use that color. Try it out on some scrap as a test before you commit and see how you like it.

blue. Orange and Blue and complementary colors. Sorry for the christian overtones but, Red and Green are the colors of christmas, yellow and purple the easter colors and BLUE and orange the original halloweene colors. Now you know how to decorate on halloweene...

You know, you could go to a hardware store (like Home Depot or Lowes) and look at their paint colors. They usually have big displays with hundreds of colors, and you can match up your orange with either reds or browns or something else, becaus it really depends on the shade of orange you're working with.

Blue, because orange and blue are contrary colors. That means they're like opposites, so orange stands out the best when there's blue around it.

Epona's answer is amazingly stable. in case you lookup shade institutions you will discover distinct institutions counting on who has written them and what structures they're drawing from. yet you may continuously use institutions that make sense to you. case in point - you will in all probability discover that easy blue is the colour linked with peace. yet counting on what sort of peace you're going for you may pick a distinct shade. perhaps crimson if it truly is for peace in the family individuals or with acquaintances, crimson if it truly is non secular in nature, or green if it truly is physique appropriate. The institutions I easily have a tendency to pass with are: crimson - lust, action, power, braveness Orange - creativity, braveness, power (greater resourceful sort than the crimson). Yellow - issues relating the techniques (like perhaps you have have been given a attempt to benefit for) or psychological concept. easy green - prosperity darkish green - healing easy Blue - peace, tranquility darkish Blue - desires, now and back concept crimson - issues coping with the non secular White - purification and could be a stand in for virtually something Black - freeing negativity, banishing crimson - love, friendship, family individuals i don't have faith there is any shade which could be prevented. yet I in lots of cases use a distinct affiliation than what i've got listed. And my institutions are in easy terms valid for yet another individual in the event that they make sense to them. i take advantage of white candles maximum in lots of cases as I continuously have them reachable and that they are able to continuously be "spiced up" with distinct oils that's something I do very in lots of cases.

I think a soft brown would look really nice but if the cat and or dog are brown maybe a red-brown.

Maybe you can try blue.
Blue will make the oranges pop and the poor kitty won't be lost.
