my wallet was stolen with my current license in it, and I have not had a chance to get to the dmv for a new one. There have been stores that won't take my checks because the license I have is expired. I have heard that it is still good as an id for a certain amount of time. Is this true?

Nope... if you're stopped by law enforcement with an expired license they can cite you for an expired license. In fact, they can arrest you in order to prove your identity (not fun as this happened to me). You can then take the issue to court and explain the matter of you wallet being stolen, but that takes more time away from work and so on. Just make an appointment with the DMV to pay the fee for a new license and at least you'll have the receipt along with the expired ID which will likely save you hassles.

I hate to say it but until you get a new license you will not have a valid form of I.D.. An expired driver's license is not considered a valid form of I.D. because it is expired...no longer good. If it isn't valid enough to use in a road block, then the driver's license isn't good enough for a check or anything else. Sorry.

The only legal proof of age you can use, in lieu of a current driver's license is an current or expired US Passport or an original copy of your birth certificate.
