20*0.15=(20+x)*0.10
3=2+0.10x
0.10x=1
x=10
so 10 ounces of water must be added

10 ounces
15/100 = x/20 : x is the mass of argyrol in the original solution
x = 3 ounces
10/100 = 3/y : y is the mass of the 10% solution
y = 30 ounces
The original solution contained (20-3) ounces of water. The later solution contains (30-3) ounces of water. So the water added was 10 ounces

No algebra needed here.
15% of a 20 oz total is 3 oz. So to have a 10% solution, the total amount should be 10 x 3 oz = 30 oz.
Therefore, add 10 oz of water. QED

15% of 20 ounces = 3 ounces of argyrol in current solution
Let x = amount of water to add.
Then 3 ounces argyrol = 10% (20 + x)
3 = 2+.1x
1 = .1x
10 = x = ounces of water to be added.

put this under chemistry next time and more people will reply and you are far more likely to get the right answer. a 15% solution that is 20oz means it is 85% water. Therefore there are 20oz*85%=17oz water and 3oz argyrol. To make argyrol 10% you take the oz of argyrol and devide by 10% to find the total oz of solution which means 3/10%=30oz. Therefore, there must be 30 oz of solution and 3oz of it is argyrol. to conclude, subtract the oz of argyrol from the oz of solution to get 27oz of water in the 10% argyrol solution. Subtract the initial ammount of water from the ammount needed to make a 10% solution and you get 10oz of water that need to be added to make a 10% solution of argyrol
