What's the point of making New Year's resolutions?

Question

If you can't put your foot down and make a decision to start or stop doing something any other time during the year what makes you think you can do it on New Year's Eve/Day?

I can understand that people like working toward goals, and that's fine, but if you only do it one day a year it seems like it would become more of a ritual than anything else...

because it something to Start in the new year like in 2007 i will stop smoking or because they want to do what they do longer so wait to new years to start
