As many users have said, it could be that subscriptions have expired but you should have been prompted about this by the program. Even if the Norton was a trial version on a new pc, you should get some sort of warning to say it has expired and a link to renew or buy a full version.
Do check that a firewall or other security app is not stopping the program from updating. If you find no error codes being shown by Norton then you could try uninstalling and reinstalling it providing you have the cd and key.
It is possible that a virus has got through and "disabled" the update feature of your anti virus. Even still, if the program has not updated in a while, your pc is very vulnerable to infection.

First of all, Norton isn't rubbish, Norton is quality. It might not update because your subscription has ran out. Or if ur subscription has ran out and it simply wont connect to the website when it asks you to, then this isn't a problem, this is the Norton website being shite!!!! Just go to here http://shop.symantecstore.com/store/symnahho/en_US/DisplayUpgradePage/ThemeID.106300/pgm.5067200
and then u can upgrade.
Symantec is the best, along with McAfee, dont listen to the bullshit free stuff, it does not do the same job

if i was you i would get a copy of avg, i have norton and avg on my laptop but a few weeks ago i scanned with norton and it said i had no viruses or threats and when i scanned with avg it found adware and two trojan horse viruses on my system. norton is the most popular software and people making the viruses know how to get through the programmes barriers, my advice is dont pay to upgrade norton, get avg!

There are usually 2 reasons why Norton won't live update: Either your internet broke or your virus protection suscription has ended.
Next time you post a question, give some detail

Your subscription probably expired. Use something other than norton, it's a piece of crap.

How long have you had it on your computer? When you purchase software like this it is for a limited period, you may find your subscription has expired and needs to be renewed...easily done online.

The reasons are following
1. Either you are not updating it.
2. Some firewall is preventing it to do it.
3. Auto update has been disabled.
