First, you apply some liquid eye liner or a very dark normal eye liner right at your lashline and onto your eyelids. Then you apply a neutral eye shadow color to your eyelids. Blend it in with the eye liner. (you can use your finger or a q-tip.) As you get higher, blend it in until it's the lightest shade at the crease of your eye.
Hope that helps! :)
Good Luck

if you want a smokey looking eye, try getting MAC eye shadows to start off with, they blend the best that i've ever tried! and they have sooo many different color shades, that you can do anything!! but just to give you a basic run down.. the easiest way to do the smokey eyes is..
1. BLACK eyeliner on the top and bottom lids.
2. black to dark grey eye shadow, the top lid, but no the crease and some ppl will put a thin line underneath the bottom lids too, depends on how dramatic u want to get.
3. lighter grey to white, put over the whole lid...even where u just put the black and all the way out as far as u want it to go, putting it over the black and grey already will help it blend!!!
basically..its all what looks good on u!!! so just buy some eye shadows and play around!! thats the only way u will find out what u like on u!!! good luck

Add some mesquite chips to your eye shadow, apply it and then walk into a smokehouse.
Okok, so I couldn't resist. Honestly, get a lighter and hold it under the tip of the eyeliner for about 1 second. It will soften the eyeliner so it smears better. Be sure to blow on it once before applying so it won't burn you but don't let it cool enough to become firm again. Apply it, and then use the other end of the eyeliner stick or a q-tip with the cotton removed and smear it away from your eye so that it looks lighter as it moves away from your eye and darker closer to your eye. Also, it's helpful to use a smokey eyeliner - they actually make eyeliner called "smokey" whatever (e.g., "smokey brown", "smokey grey", etc.). You might have to buy it from one of the higher quality make-up companies you find in department stores - like Estee Lauder or Clinique.

How to apply smoky eye makeup
Follow these easy steps and get the best results for a smoky eye makeup
Ensure the eyelids are oil free so that the makeup does not melt through the day and smudge out as a result.
Depending on the color of the smoky eye makeup, apply eyeliner of the same or similar color on the upper lash line making it thicker in the middle of the eye.
For the lower eyelashes, choose eyeliner of lighter color and spread it well and apply a bit of shadow if required.
Choose a light base color and apply so that it will combine well with a rich color for the perfect smoky eye makeup. Soft gold and deep purple, champagne and electric blue or peach and emerald green – some exotic combinations for the smoky eye makeup look.
After the eyeliner and the base are done, apply the dark color with the help of an eye shadow brush and work your way from your lash line upwards.
Ensure the dark color covers the eyeliner already applied and stop applying the dark color at the crease of your eyes. Skillful blending is the secret to perfect smoky eye makeup.
Check the effect and twirl some mascara for added effect.

first line your whole eye with dark gray liner. then apply cream shadow in a dark gray on the top lid, and dust it under the eye. next, layer lighter grays above the darker gray up to the crease. this will make a gorgeous smokey eye.

if you don't have the correct brushes the easiest way is to do this:
apply your eye shadow from the lashes out first; they take a Q tip and smudge.
