I just leave in the contacts and I don't open my eyes underwater.. otherwise there's nothing you can really do.

I'm nearsighted. Whenever I wear a diving mask under the water, without glasses or contacts, my vision is perfect! I can see all the way from one end of the pool to the other with perfect clarity.
It doesn't work out of the water, however.
I've never used the goggles with one lens for each eye, so I don't know if they work as well, or even at all.

At least three different possibilities occur to me -
Wear your lenses and wear goggles over them
You can buy goggles of different lens strength so you can swim without wearing your lenses - perhaps not your prescription, but close enough. I have been scuba diving for years with a mask like that - not my prescription but I do just fine.
Or - for a little more money - you can have goggles made to your exact prescription.
Lots of choices, and it makes a world of difference. Go for it.

i grew up with the same experience & i was on the swim team throughout grade school & high school. since my vision isn't that terrible, i could get away with using regular goggles during swim meets; no glasses or contacts (which i otherwise depend on for everything else).
if you really need to correct your vision when you're swimming, though, you can wear contacts under your goggles, or you can get prescription goggles.

The best way? A miniature submarine.
The most affordable way? A SCUBA mask that fits over your glasses. It's easier to see through a SCUBA mask than any goggles you can buy, prescription or otherwise.

I used to work in an optometrist office, and we could make swimming goggles with prescription in them. Talk to your eye doctor.
