First off, Happy Birthday. The reason it is known as a "Sweet Sixteen" party is because of the joy of becoming a sixteen year old. There is a difference between a sweet sixteen party and just a party for your birthday however. a sweet sixteen party is supposed to be an enormous even where everyone you know is invited which can cost several hundred dollars. a regular party would be your close friends doing something you enjoy. the reason for these parties is because 16 is the kind of ideal year. still exempt from taxes as a teenager and potentially not needing to work, yet still having the freedom to drive and be a young adult. therefore this "sweet sixteen" party is an expression of your freedom.
Happy birthday

A 'sweet sixteen' is a traditional birthday party for girls to have when they turn sixteen years old. In parts of the United States and Canada, sixteen is the age at which one may obtain a driver's license. It is also the age of consent in many states, hence it is viewed by many adolescents as an important milestone.

The term can also be derived to mean turning 16 without having been kissed.

Some say that the origins of a 'sweet sixteen' are definitely in the debutante ball.

With its origins in a French word (debuter: to begin) and English tradition, the debut has captured the fancy of modern-day America, even managing to survive cynicism, feminism and the evolution of the contemporary teenager.

The days are long gone when young women of 17th-century England were introduced to the royal court by making a formal bow to the reigning monarch. But the debut still marks the transformation from girl to woman, from student to member of society.

Like its sister coming-of-age rituals - the quinceanera in Hispanic tradition and the bat mitzvahs in Jewish religious observance - the debut is also a chance for society to share its pride in its young ladies of late-high school and early-college age, and its pleasure at having them enter into community service.

PS - Happy 16th to ya!

Probably a century or two ago, sixteen was the age when a girl in our culture was considered eligible for marriage, or at least for dating or courtship. The Sweet Sixteen party, or at least a little celebration, marked the birthday when a girl would start being considered as a young woman.

In Hispanic culture, the age is fifteen, the Quinceanera.
