I can give you one certain reason: the lack of any true third-party candidate. Sure, Ross Perot and Ralph Nader have gotten a decent amount of votes in a couple of presidential elections, but until we see a third-party candidate receive a substantial amount of votes -- say, 20% -- the two-party system will continue to thrive.
Further (and maybe separately), the way our government is set up purposely makes it tough for minor parties to thrive. In many States, it is extremely challenging for a third-party candidate to get his/her name on the ballot. The requirements -- things like getting a certain number of signatures -- are such that Democrats and Republicans are able to easily stay visible while not having to spend the same amount of time and effort.

b/c of our electoral system and bc we are a one party system. you have to get more then 50 % of the vote to get elected. this is the reason third parties do not succeed bc they never get enough support. if we had a proportional representation (PR) system like they have in Britain then third parties could get elected.
This is the main reason and the only reason i can think of right now.
But i suppose you could also say that since the rep and dem parties have been so strong since the end of the civil war that it is hard for another part yto get control.
Before the civil war there were many parties in the united states and they didn't get enough support to succeed (on of the reason Lincoln was elected was bc the south was split into 2 parties.)

Because the aristocrasy only needs to finance two political parties to maintain the illusion of popular choice while only offering choices acceptable to them.
