Rep.-elect Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress could take his oath on a baloney sandwich for all I care. Lets see how he legislates before we condemn him, the first few votes will tell the tale.

Personally I think it's great, shows that the American dream of inclusiveness and religious freedom is alive and well. Make me proud to be an American. But I will say this, since religious books are causing so much controversy why not have all members swear on the Document they are swearing to uphold, screw the religions, it's the damn CONSTITUTION of the good old USA they are swearing to uphold, and that's the real issue not the freakin' book, will they UPHOLD our laws? The last congress sure as hell didn't, IE: Ney Cunningham, Delay Et al

Being sworn in on the Bible is a formality. If a congressperson doesn't want to be sworn in on anything, that's their choice. It's more of a photo op than anything. Actually there is a passage in the NT of the Bible where Jesus says that people should "let their yes be yes and their no be no" and not swear oaths like this.
If he wants to use his holy book, the Quran, I see no problem with that.

He has a right to use anything he wants. I hear that some liberals use a copy of the New York Times. My concern is that we will have a member of another hate group in Congress. Robert KKK Byrd was more than enough already.

There is nothing in the Constitution against it. You republicans can't pick and choose when freedom of religion is applied. Although our government sure does pick and choose when the Habeas Corpus can be applied.

Nice to know American bigotry is alive and well dude. When you get to Congress, you can be sworn in with your hand on a copy of the Turner Diaries.

So what is your point, if I do not believe in the same book as you do I must be a traitor. This is typical right wing thinking and my hope is someday that you see that America is made up of many faiths, ethnic origins, and beliefs, all could live in harmony without religious bigots like yourself.

I think it is totally cool. Read it earlier. We have had Jews sworn in on the old testament, and Mormons sworn in on the Book of Mormon.

I also think it is cool that T. Jefferson owned a copy of the Quran.

I don't have a problem with it, it's his belief.

But, the minute anything he proposes smells like an imposition of Sharia law, that's where he needs to be ousted.
