I know for a fact that DivX is a format that is compressed; as the flyer for The Sourse says, "It is the MP3 of video". Ok, yeah, but, I also saw videos that were in the XviD format. What is the difference between the two? They're both compressed, and by the looks of it, XviD is just DivX backwards, or is it?

Xvid and Divx are both Mpeg-4 codecs. Divx is made by the Divx company, and Xvid is open source. They are both similar in encoding quality, with Xvid getting the nudge. Xvid also encodes faster.

Xvid and Divx, being both Mpeg 4 codecs, produce Mpeg 4 compliant bitstreams, so if you can play one, you can play the other.

DivX is a digital video compression format based on the MPEG-4 technology. DivX files can be downloaded over high-speed lines in a relatively short time without sacrificing the quality of the digital video. Often used on the Internet to exchange video files.

XviD is an open source MPEG-4 video codec. Originally based on OpenDivX, XviD was started by a group of volunteer programmers after the OpenDivX source was closed.

XviD and DivX are both MPEG-4 encodings. Kind of like computers with a different brand. Both do the same thing, but XviD is better.

XviD is the codec that DivX runs on, therefore they can both be opened in the DivX player.

Xvid is open source, Divx isnt. Xvid is generally better. However most devices that play divx will play xvid no problem
