School has been around since before the Pilgrims landed. The wealthy used to send their children back to England for formal education. Later, some religious groups started schools for the less affluent, but they did not teach as today's schools do.
Horace Mann is considered the "father" of public schools and was influential in bringing free, public education to the majority.

The first people known to assemble youngsters to teach them to write in wet clay tablets were the Sumerians. They used a cuneiform alphabet, and their lessons (some preserved for posterity) were mostly on how to write using it.
Of course, back then only the young ones belonging to the elite (civil or religious) had access to such learning.
