1. get x's to one side. (subtract 2x from both sides)
2x-148=556
2x=704
x=352

4. distribute the 3 by multiplying
3x+3=45
3x=42
x=14

6. ..strait forward
x-138=89(4)
x-138=356
x=494

5(2+x)-x=410
To solve this you have to somehow get x by itself, but you can only do it by following the rules. Whatever you do to one side of the equation you have to do to the other or your answer will be wrong. Generally, you have to 1)simplify, 2)combine, and 3)isolate.

1)You have to simplify the equation by multiplying through. So 5(2+x) would become 10+5x because you multiply the five to the 2 and then to the x. This is called the distributive property. Our equation becomes: 10+5x-x=410

2)Now you have to combine like terms. Combine the numbers with the numbers and the xs with the xs.
ln this case we need to combine the xs. Think of 5x as being five xs. So 5x-x would equal 4x. (Five xs minus one x equals 4 xs.) Remember though, that technically the five is being multiplied to the x, and that this line of thought only works in this way.
So: 10+5x-x=410
Becomes: 10+4x=410

3)Now isolate the x. Try to get the 4x by itself first. (We'll worry about separating the 4 from the x later.) To do that you need to cancel out the 10. If you subtract 10 won't you be left with 4x on that side? Remember, though, that whatever you do to one side of the equation you have to do to the other. So: 10-10+4x=410-10
This can be simplified to: 0+4x=400
4x=400
Now we have to cancel out the 4. To cancel a number you do the opposite operation being performed. In this case 4 is being multiplied to x. What is the opposite operation of multiplication? Division. So you divide 4 from both sides.
4/4 x= 400/4
4/4 equals 1 and 400/4 equals 100, so:
1x=100
and x=100

x/2-50=200
Follow the same order of steps as above.

1) Simplify. In this case there is nothing t0 simplify.
2)Combine like terms. In this case there is nothing to combine.
3)Isolate. You want to get x/2 by itself first. 50 is being subtracted so you do the opposite operation to cancel it. Addition is the opposite of subtraction, and whatever you do to one side you have to do to the other. So:
x/2-50+50=200+50
x/2-0=250
x/2=250
Now, do the opposite operation being performed to disentangle the 2 from the x. Right now division is being performed, and the opposite of division is multiplication, so you would multiply both sides by 2.
2(x/2)=2(250)
2x/2=500
x=500

Hope this helps. There are many many ways to explain this, so you may find a different explanation that makes more sense to you. Algebra is hard for most people at first. It's like learning a new language. It all sounds like gibberish until you learn it and slowly the rules start making sense and the equations seem more solvable. Remember to study the rules a lot. It really helps. The more you see them the more comfortable you'll feel about them. Good luck!

Rules for solving the variable of an equation:

1. isolate the variable (do the opposite operation to cancel out what ever the number is that is NOT next to the variable)
2. make shure whatever you do to that number do to the other side of the equal sign.
3. make shure you are combining like terms.
4.cancel out the number that is with x, opposite operation again. you get "x = # " <--answer

to solve these equations u need 2 get all the x's on on side and all the numbers on the other side. i'll give u an example on how to do this. in the first problem u can subtract the2x from the 4x, giving u 2x and therfore putting ur x's on one side. then add the 148 to the 566, giving u 714. so far ur equation shuld read....2x=714 now just divide! wat is 714 divided by 2? 357 so, ur solved equation shuld read x=357. its as simple as getting ur x's on one side and ur numbers on the other and dividing!
