It depends on the antidepressant. It is best to consult a doctor about this prior to trying to conceive. You want to ensure your baby has the best start possible. Different medications have different side effects that could harm a unborn child. It's not worth taking a chance. There may be a antidepressant they can switch you to if yours is a problem. Prior to my pregnancy the doctors had to switch my heart medication to one that would be better for the child.

Also you should be placed on prenatal vitamins prior to trying to conceive and they can help reduce the risk of birth defects.

It depends on the medication. If you are ready to try for a baby, I would talk to the doctor that prescribed you the antidepressant and explain what you are planning. If indicated, the doctor will help you wean off the medication. I know of one antidepressant that some doctors are ok with (zoloft). However, I have seen babies have withdrawal symptoms from zoloft (not severe). I would keep an open communication with your doctors. Good Luck!

I was on antidepressants when I found out that I was pregnant with my 2nd child. However, after I found out that I was pregnant, I stopped the meds. You may have to be willing to give up your meds if you do become pregnant. Most antidepressants (as with any other drug) are not good to take when pregnant.
It is hard and it will take a lot of courage on your part.
Good luck with your choice.

Any kind of medications you take is at risk for the baby. I was depressed when I was preggars and I didn't take any medications. i'm glad for that. what I did was go for walks because walking is exercise and it increases endorphins. endorphins make you happy. Walk around the mall several times or walk around the park.

If you talk to your doctor they might say that it's safe. But how do they know? they can't read the future. If something happens to your child, like birth defects, for example, the doctor will say it's not their fault. So that's why I didn't take any medications.

You should talk with the doctor that prescribed the antidepressants first.

Depending on what you're taking, an alternative may be prescribed

Maybe, depending upon what your doctor says before you are pregnant. The hormone changes that you will go through put a lot of stress on you. You may need medication adjustments. Good Luck.

It's always best to talk to your doctor about any medication you are taking prior to getting pregnant, but from personal experience, I was taking Zoloft when I got pg with my son and my gynecologist was not concerned. I started to wean off of them gradually during my second trimester. My son is happy and healthy.
