12 or 24 volts wouldn`t make any difference you wouldn`t have it hooked up long enough to hurt your batterie. You must have hooked it up backwards to fry your battery

The fuel type of engine makes no difference whatsoever. Connecting the battery correctly and checking the otput of the donor battery is far more important. The wrong connection - positive to negative or vice versa - will blow the battery and risks wrecking the electrics on your motor. The output of the donor engine can burn your battery if it is too powerful. Match voltage and amperage and it will be alright wether the power comes from an electric charger, a diesel or a petrol engine. If the battery fails consistently check the electric circuitry of the dynamo battery charger and if this is working correctly then buy a new battery.

It sounds like you just shorted the battery and will need to buy a new one... What did you jump it from? another car? is that car still running or not so much? Try jumping it the right way this time and see what happens first

Depends if the van runs 12 or 24 volts, if it's a 12 volt battery then there shouldn't be a problem.

no just because diesels have heavier duty batteries does not mean that yours is ready for knackers yard unless it has caused you problems before..is it sealed battery with no maintaince or do you have to put in distilled water,if the latter then you might have to renew battery because life of these is around 3-5 years depending on useage.
