Until someone gets to know you, they can only go on what they see. If you show up for a job interview dressed like a slob, they will think "If he can't make the effort to dress for an interview, how can I assume he will make the effort to do the job properly."

As some people above said, what you wear is a personal choice (unlike you skin color or hair type, for example) and therefore is frequently used as a "statement" of the image you want to project of yourself. When people judge you by what you wear, they are to some extent acknowledging the statement you are making about yourself. However, I do agree the people can "read too much" into your statement.

Usually this is what the wearer wants. If a male wants to be recognised as ghetto, he would wear a large shirt, shorts that reach long past his knees, and socks to pull up to his knees. This is just the way of modern society. Clothing has been a way to display ranks in ancient times, too. A peasant would not dress in the same way as a merchant or high-ranking soldier.

Because apparel, like anything else we can see with our eyes that people associate with themselves, can be a good judge of character. If a girl dresses like a slut, one can fairly assume that she is a slut. If a young man wears chains and baggy pants, one can assume he is a thug. If people wear provocative clothing but don't want to face the consequences of attracting attention to themselves by wearing clothing that others associate with these negative things, they shouldn't wear them in the first place. I certainly don't feel sorry for them, and I will go on judging them by their stupid clothes if they do choose to wear them.

Because man will judge the outer shell of a person and not the heart.
When someone is more interested in the gift wrapping than in the gift itself...then they are missing out on the true gift.

its a way of controlling the minds of the population. The upper class of society controls EVERY THING. They control the media, government, fashion, entertainment, religion, even the food we eat. They hire actors and singers to act and dress a certain way, to impress different kinds of people. Then, they say that its cool. So they make angry music for angst youth, have the band wear all black so the kids do and bam, police are on them like stink on ****. Ect. for other types of music.

Because of what you wear says a lot about you
For instance, if a girl wore a mini-skirt and thigh-boots and stood on a corner.
Maybe she's waiting for a ride?
People would assume she's a hooker because she's obviously not afraid to show her stuff
