I don't think that DSL modem has wireless built-in, so that may have been your first problem, you may have been trying someone else's wireless with a weak signal. You really should buy a wireless router: they're simple to set up, you won't have to swap your cable between your computer and Wii whenever you want to use the internet on either, and they're pretty cheap, you could get one for close to what the Wii LAN Adapter costs. To answer your question though, if you bought the LAN Adapter, it should be as straightforward as connecting the modem to the adapter via a cable, verifying the settings on the Wii and going. CAT-5 network specification is 100 meters, so the Wii does NOT have to be close to the modem in order to be reliable, as someone else mentioned, but 100 meters is the "general" max before errors start occurring.

As far as I know, there is not direct LAN adapter for the Wii. If you goto best buy or Wal-Mart, you can get an adapter which will plug into a USB on an internet connected computer, and it will create a small wireless network the your Wii (or DS) can connect to.

Shouldn't need the specific wii one...all you need is a usb network/ethernet adapter such as the KINAMAX USB 2.0 to RJ45 Fast Ethernet 10/100 Base-T Network Adapter. One side will be a rj45 plug(looks like an oversized phone jack) and the other will be usb.

I use the same thing with my tivo.

In answer to Bonlwick (and original poster), if you have a router you may need to enter the mac address of the wii into the routers setup page to allow access (you can do this via youe pc's browser).
You will find the wii's Mac address in the options on the wii.

GameStop, it's behind the counter, you have to ask for it. Your looking for the DS adapter, but don't worry, it's Wii compatible

We are having the same problem. We cannot connect even though my laptop and one of our computers are wireless. Ordered one from nintendo.com, but it is backordered (there's a surprise, still don't have enough remotes). I would try E-Bay; they have some non-Nintendo ones in stock.
