Excellent post. I think we're divided because politicians love to play on our fears, regardless of party affiliation.

I am US borne, I lived in Miami-Florida for seven years, before that, I lived in south America and recently move out of Florida for good to the UK, and now I look back to these past 7 years and even though I did my professional career there, I felt it was the 7 worst years of my live (social wise), because of this capitalistic systems I did not have many friends, everybody was busy, did not have a real girlfriend cause I did not have money to show and people saw me like I was a rat because I was poor “the more you have, the more you are” . And in the US, you can not pursued a university degree unless you come from a very wealthy family or live in debt for the rest of your life and if you become sick, you either have to have an insurance (very expensive if not paid by employer) or lived in debt for the rest of your live.
I think in the US, there is a culture to work but not culture to socialise with others, for example Drs see you as a number $ more than as a patient, i don’t want to generalise but i think the US system changes people into machines and blocks their mind form what is outside, most of the people I meet there, think that the US is the best country in every single way, without even visiting other countries, well I don’t blame then , with the little time off we had in Florida as listed on linked below, there is not time to visit any other countries,
Well, something else I realize when I was travelling Europe and south America, I noticed that most of Americans did not make any effort to a least speak the most common or used word in other languages and expect everybody to speak english as once a girl from Chicago told me “we are leaving the a globalisation world so everybody need to speak English”
In the other hand I think that economically wise US is great , my parents are doing financially very well so is my brother and most of the people I know, but unfortunately all the money they make and have, cant not even be enjoyed. I truly respect you opinion but I think that WE as “Americans” should see the world equally, change our minds, not because we are richest and have the economical power we have the right to abuse others and impose our system, ethics, morals as every country has their own and we should respect that.

I am a US citizen. No I don't like what my country has become.
We are the new Modern Day Romans-except we are better because we are faster at depleting a country's resources and decimating their people than the Romans could ever hope to imagine.
I don't like that my country is essentially run by big business. I do not like the fact that our highest, most honored office was stolen by a buffoon who has made a mockery of our rights, traditions, and values. I do not like the fact that the majority of US citizens do not care what happens in the world unless it directly affects their lifestyles. I do not like the fact that when confronted with truth, US citizens prefer to look the other way. I do not like the fact that the United States is seen as "locusts" by the rest of the world. I do not like the fact that the media lies to us to keep the smokescreen up regarding real issues. I do not like the fact that a celebrity breakup gets more media coverage and outrage from the country than does genocide in a different part of the world. I do not like the selfishness of the average US citizen with his screw you as long as I can get mine, speeding in your SUV, talking on the phone, endangering your life so you can get there two seconds before anyone else, mentality.
So, why don't I leave? Because this country needs people to stand up against the evil that has gradually become the accepted norm. Because I want to be part of the solution, not the problem. Because I believe that soon a change will come.
I am a US citizen, yes. A modern day American? Never.

Thank you, I would love to give my opinion about it, and i thank you for giving me a chance at that.
My biggest point is Did the 13 colonies of the "new world" like it when a King across the ocean kept dictating their lives and telling them how to run the country?
But yet we feel we can cotroll the rest of the world. We should have gotten out right when we got Sadam, now all Bush is doing ( I'm sorry I shouldn't say "we") is lowering our country to the standads of the dictators our government looks down upon.
I'm sorry Bush but it's hard to look down on someone when your on the same level.
Oh and to answer you initial question, yes I am an american,
But like most other americans, my heritage is from all over the world.
Bizakio
Is vengance the best course of action, have you not heared Evil Begets Evil, Good Begets Good?
If we take vengance, then they take action, and we are in an endless cycle.
The question is who is going to be the bigger person on this?

I never thought in a million years that we would have a president who pulled strings to get into office and then dupe the nation the way he did to go to war. Bush is not America and yet he is our figurehead. A democracy means that the public makes policy decisions. The fact of the matter is the majority of US citizens do not agree with this war and how it's been handled. I love my country but I don't love what is happening here; it is contrary to what I learned our great nation should be comprised of. It makes me absolutely heartsick. It's like watching someone you love die and not being able to do a damned thing about it. I feel absolutely helpless. The US is it's own prisoner of war.

There used to be a long tradition in the U.S. of free speech, and a lot of that was the ability to criticize and complain especially about the elected officials. For some evil and very unpatriotic reason, Bush and his administration made people think that this was somehow unpatriotic or unamerican. It is not. The ability to criticize those in power (or its systems in general) is what made the U.S. great.
I suppose that if you disagree with something in government, you can participate by writing to your representatives or organizing to change things. The problem with that is that there isn't enough time especially if you're raising a family and working. So all we have is our vote and our voice. Now people like you come along and want to take away our voice. Next you'll take away our vote. Thanks a lot.

I don't think the people saying this mean ALL americans. The fact that some americans are stupid, lazy .etc... makes those statements correct...... The first step to finding a solution for a problem is admitting that you have a problem... Notice that even when alcoholics go to rehab, the first thing they have to admit and say is "I am an alcoholic", so there is nothing wrong with saying that a problem exists.

I hate to tell you this, but I am a US citizen FIRST. The US is in the North American Continent. Then there are South and Central America. America is not a country.

Some people believe "my country right or wrong" and some people believe "my country, let's work to make it better". You are the former, the people you complain about are the latter. I am also the latter. Self-criticism is a sign of humility and intelligence in my opinion.

OK I live here am mum of a USA son and daughter married to us navy man and my son is USAF BUT repeat BUT am not an American citizen..............yes am happy to live here etc.
I have no real opinion on this war as both husband son and brother have fought there and in fact husband and brother was in the LAST one as well.............
This was in going to become this generations Vietnam IMO as no one can win against the silly stupid idiots they are fighting against as, as a PEOPLE your country and mine cant NOT even begin to fight an ideology that encompasses men strapping bombs to their chest and thinking this is the right thing to do..........you are almost shooting at shadows, there is NO clearly defined enemy.
Get their government in order as best as you can and then pull out..........TRUST me within a five year period it will be back to no water no electric most of the time and they will be on the long list of other countries looking for handouts from your and my countries to feed their sorry butts..................
