The top 8 teams fom each (west and eastern) conference make it in. You get 2 points for a win, 1 for an OT or Shootout loss, and if you are in the top8 in your conference in points you make it in. Division leaders get a top three spot automatically.

The eight teams in the East that obtain the most points and the eight teams in the West that obtain the most points throughout the regular season, kinda. However the top three seeds go the the top three point getting teams in each of the divisions for both the East and West standings. This is supposed to ensure that there is equal representation of at least one team from each of the divisions, which there are six.

Top 8 in each conference, seeded 1-8 by points (2 points for a win, 1 point for a OT or shootout loss, 0 pts for a regulation loss). One funny thing is that the winners of the three divisions are seeded 1-3, so the 3rd seed often has fewer points than lower seeds because there's usually one weak division in each conference.

same as in NBA....top 8 teams go from both conferances
1 seed plays 8 seed
4 plays 5
2 plays 7
3 plays 6
winner of game 1 and game 2 play each other
winner of game 3 and 4 play each other
then the winner of those 2 games face each other which is the conferance championship
the same happens with the other conferance and it is left with 2 teams who will play in the Stanley Cup Finals

Same as in NBA, the division winners get the top spots depending on their points won during the season. The rest are teams that are in the top 8 in points in their conference.
