I live in Los Angeles, and I don't remember any earthquake in 1984.

I remember the 1971 earthquake, and the 1994 earthquake.
The 1971 earthquake lasted a good long time, with a lot of shaking! Stuff fell over and broke. There was a low growling noise.

The 1994 earthquake was just a nice mild earthquake... then suddenly there was a BIG JERK and everything got knocked over and broke.

I believe the earthquake you're reffering to occurred in San Francisco, there's no record of a major quake in LA in 1984. The one in San Francisco was 6.2 in the richter scale and my step-mom was there. She said she was stopped at a stoplight right infront of an overpass, like three cars back she said and there were people stopped at a light underneath the overpass and when the earthquake hit the overpass collapsed and all the cars under it were crushed with no survivors, she said it was horrifying. To this day, when she is stopped at a light she will not stop under an overpass. It doesn't matter how much space she has to leave or how bad traffic is, she won't stop under one. She stops before the overpass and when the light turns green she goes as fast as she can to get out from under it. The first time I rode in a car with her she did that and I asked why and that's when she told me the story. She lives in Texas now, no major earthquakes, and she still does it.

It's amazing that I lived there for so many years and never once experience one of the major earthquakes. I moved half way across country to experience nothing major but it was certainly bed shaking.........enough to wake me up. Of course I live according to scientists on a major fault. I cannot imagine in any way shape or form the horror of experiencing something so devastating. I was on vacation there in July '84 I'. glad I wasn't there in Oct. '84.

I remember the 1994 earthquake........not 1984. I was only 10.....and we had to redo our house cause our patio collapsed. I didn't even live in LA....but in Simi Valley....which is not to far from LA.
