It depends, on some models the gasket itself is up to £50, if the cylinder head bolts need replacing £30 plus, the head will need specialist compression testing and possibly skimming and there are the inlet and exhaust gaskets etc as well, throw in a couple of hours labour and £250 isnt that unreasonable, garages have overheads, liability insurance to pay and they have to eat you know.

Head gasket went on my Subaru around 3 years ago. Was going to cost over £300 to have it put right then, so £250 now seems quite reasonable.

If that price includes parts and labour, including skimming the head and changing the cam belt then you've probably got yourself a bargain.
£350-£400 is not unreasonable around here.

I payed £300 xmas 2005.
It wont matter who you talk to,you will always find someone saying you got ripped off whatever you pay.
Go to a good known/trusted garage.
Not your Kwikfits etc.

Good luck.

It can be very expensive, as taking off the heads often requires taking off alot of other parts as well.
Then again, if you have the tools, why not do it yourself? It does take quite a bit of time, especially if you dont know what you're doing.

Best of Luck!

£250????? That would hardly touch the labour costs to most garages.

Not really, it takes a lot of time and effort to do it right.
