Underneath them there is a spot that horses can not get to. This is where the flys land and dirt gets to. You will be able to feel it. This spot never fails to make very good friends with a horse!!
If they have a main (my work horse doesn't have much of one, but our filly has a long one) up under here is another spot.
Our horses love there butt scratched, absolutely love it!! This can lead to bad habits though. Like backing up to anyone afraid of horses or not just to get there butt scratched. Some people freak out over this if they do not know your horses. Also if you do not wrap there tail and want a nice tail this can hurt the tail hares when they go to scratch there butt on tree's etc. They may do this on there own but once you start scratching them here they seam to do it more often.
Look at mares who have fowls on them, see how the mare strokes baby, if you have a young horse do this with the young horse, they like it.
Do you best not to let your horse push you around when she/he wants scratched, ours will follow me around like puppy dogs and the filly when younger used to try to push me around to get her scratches, this could get someone hurt so stop this behavior before it gets out of control.
Well all I can think of for now, good luck! :0) and have fun.

Mine LOVE to be scratched right where the neck meets the shoulder! one of mine likes to be scratched on the rump but the others don't. It depends on the horse, but try different spots, especially at joints!

my horses LOVE to be scratched under their chins(between the bones)
Hipshot actually puts his head over the fence and turns it to the side to get me to scratch it. They also love to be scratched right above the dock of their tails..sometimes they even rub their butts on the fence to get it themselves--its hilarious to watch!

They like their backs brushed, and around their face you can gently scratch/rub them, and also in between their ears and behind them, and sometimes they especially like it when you rub and scratch in between and around their withers and the bottom of their neck

Depends on the horse! Generally on the withers... they love that and most of them love it on their head... and when they have thier halters/ bridles on... they LOVE to be scratched under the straps!

sounds funny but my horses always liked to be scratched on the sides of their rump, make sure you stand to the side when you try it.

if their not head shy - behind the ear. Otherwise the rump approx. 6 inches in from the top of their tail(but be sure to stand at the side in case he is a kicker)

Mine like it everywhere. Mostly though, on the front of the neck, the bridge of their nose, and around the tail.
