Is there a medical name or reason for not being able to urinate?

Question

My husband had a problem giving a urine sample for his job .... could it be , as they say "stage fright".... Or is there a medical reason this might of happened? he is 38 years old and has a varaseil vein and possible polyups in his colon and he is under a TREMENDOUS amount of stress.... Could these things be contributing?

An enlarged prostate can cause pee blockage.

Of course, inhibition and fear about the medical test sometimes "paralize" even the healthiest person on earth. Impossible to urinate at the medical office, and very able to urinate with no problem at home or the place where he feels comfortable.
There is no specific name for that, and the stress under which he is now expresses itself in very many forms.
Inhibition is one of them as you have already noticed.
The oposite is also true (urinating frequently before a test or an exam).
There is then, a psychological reason for that "stage fright", and the attention should be focused not in the urinary system, but on what is causing that distress (Psychological distress).
This opinion is valid if he was able to pass urine at home or at his work, etc after that episode at the lab.

i'd go with 'stage fright'... simple nervousness

you should just discuss it with him more thoroughly if he is willing. Just ask him whether or not he feels he was not able to give a urine sample because he was embarassed. If he says he couldn't, just couldn't by any means, then plz consult a Dr.

i once had to pee for a job and the funny thing was the only way i could do it was for them to give me a mag to read.. so it would take my mind off someone watching me.. i would go with staged fright
