when compared to say... Edgewater or Roscoe Village? I am hoping to move to Chicago soon and will probably end up working at one of the big hospitals.

It isn't great. There just isn't a lot there yet and it is bordered by a lot of blight. You will have to go into other neighborhoods to grocery shop, find a dry cleaners, etc. It depends on what you are looking for. Also, are you renting or buying? Edgewater and Roscoe Village are much nicer established neighborhoods. The Illinois Medical District is in a blighted area that the city is trying to change. If you want to live nearby, you could look at Ukrainian Village, West Town, or River West. There are lots of cute affordable rental places and the neighborhoods have restaurants and some amenities. These 3 neighborhoods used to be quite rough too but have really changed in the last few years. Also, you could consider Bronzeville or Printers Row which are becoming quite upscale if you can afford it. If you are buying then maybe the Illinois Medical District might be a good long term investment. Ukrainian Village, River West, West Town, and Bronzeville have all skyrocketed in the last few years.

Previous answer is right on target. Plenty of new construction in the Medical District, but not much in the way of restaurants, or other entertainment. Good place to invest, but not the best neighborhood for every day living if you want to enjoy what the city has to offer.
A quick note, Edgewater is nice, but can be a little sketchy, whereas Roscoe Village / North Center is nice all around. Both would be a longish commute (esp. on the L) compared to West Loop, Printers Row.
