Let's see... He was socially concious when a lot of people wrote strictly bubble-gum pop. He was a lyrical master. He helped break down the standard pop song format of 12-bar one-hit wonders. And he happened to be the founding member of what was arguably the best band the music world has ever known.

There's a start for you. ;-)

He was an extremely talented singer and songwriter who was a leading part of one of the most influential rock bands in all history -- even though he had a hard growing up life. He was a working class guy from Liverpool whose father left him and his mother when he was small. Later his mother was run over by a car right in front of him . He was raised by his Aunt Mim. He told people what he really thought, not just what they wanted to hear. He was also very intelligent and promoted peace instead of war. The fact that he was killed for no reason was a great crime. All the fabulous music he could have created died with him.

Many people love John Lennon as he looked to a future that many people wanted. He didn't act like everything was okay with that time period. His lyrics were meaningful and very insightful. Plus he had a great voice and the melodies were awesome. Listen carefully and you will see why,

Ah, how have the times changed!

Back in the 60s and 70s, any artist worth his or her salt would talk about peace, social justice and harmony between different peoples.

Now, that is considered schmaltzy, maudlin, saccharine. And an artist is supposed to talk of death, hate and suicide!

John Lennon would be laughed at today. That is proof, to me, that he was a great artist.

Well, besides the fact that he was with one of the greatest bands of all time, he was a great songwriter. Listen to his music and you'll find out why he was so great. And I'm not the biggest Beatles fan, but his music was great.
