If you've asked ideal. It has to be alienware. Tech specs at best. Prices, you may find it reasonable. Go to:

http://www.alienware.com/product_pages/desktop_all_default.aspx

I suggest, you read reviews of the hardware example Game card like ATI XTX 1900 or Gefore 7950 GTX etc etc

You can choose your own specs and assemble it. If you go for the best, assembling will be more expensive. If price isn't a matter for you, buy it from alienware.

Hope the info was helpful. Do come back to choose a best answer to your question.

Ideal huh? Lets see..

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Zalman 9700 LED CPU cooler
2x DVD-RW Dual Layer Burners
Gigabyte 965P-DQ6 motherboard
2 GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 Memory
22" Widescreen LCD - 5ms response time or less.
XFX GeForce 8800 GTS Graphics card with 640mb
NXZT Lexa Mid Tower Case + replace the 120mm fans
Western Digital 7200RPM SATA2 Hard Drive with 16mb cache.

That will cost upwards of $1500.

Good question. I think Jamal D's system (see above) is pretty good. If you want to save money take an E6300 instead of the E6600. If you got a decent cooling (air cooler from Zalman, Scythe...or even better water cooling) you could overclock this cheaper processor. At least 1 GB RAM is also recommended...best RAM in my opinion is from OCZ although those aren't cheap.

Check out the gamiong systems at www.stupidcheapcomputers.net. I have one of their XW6000 systems and it SCREAMS. Their prices are good, too. A lot of times they have stuff from $800 for a good gamer up to the latest XW6400 with dual Xeon 3.0GHz Processors, 250GB SATA Hard Drive, 1GB DDR2 RAM 667, DVDRW/LightScribe Drive, NVIDIA QUADRO FX3500 256MB Graphics card. (Wiping drool off my face just thinking about it.)

A dual core processor, at least 1GB of ram (preferably 2GB), and a decent graphics card depending on the resolution of the display you intend to game on.

And not a Pentium 4/D.

Well...for gaming...provided that it's not a serious gaming like day and night, that's all you're going to do:

Pentium 4: 3.6Ghz (these are pretty cheap now)
or
Dual Core (AMD or Intel): 1.0Ghz+ (if your buying a prebuilt system, they all come with these now)

1gb + of Ram

128 to 256mb graphic card. I'd reccomend Nvidia.

looks reliable aside from the image card advise a ati hd 6950 for extra constructive gaming overall performance and a 650 watt psu,the processor itself is powerful at multi-tasking and on the specs shown above photoshop and dreamworks will run great, score -9.2

For the next gen games I would say:
Core 2 Duo E6600 (or better)
2-4GB's RAM
GeForce 7900GTX (or better)
