I have to agree with the comment about not getting your monologue from a monologue book, because as he said they have probably heard it. Then again pulling monologues from Shakespeare isn't real original either. Try pulling one from a lesser known play, or even a movie. Older ones usually do better for this. When I was in school I used to find children's books, and recite a piece from it. My most memorable one was winning the part by doing a piece from Dr. Seuss' "And to Think I Saw it on Mulberry Street". The director thought that it was just great. One of the perks to doing it that way is that those type of books are usually comfortable and familiar. Just be sure to add of movement and action into it. Don't just stand there. I have even seen people make up their own monologues by taking a conversation they may have had with a friend. BE ORIGINAL! If they have heard what you have to say 100 times before you chances are they have written you off before you even got to the end. Be careful of reciting any monologue and making it sound like a monologue, that makes no sense to anyone but me. It's hard to explain what I mean. Have you ever heard someone deliver a monologue that just sounded very recited and rehearsed? Almost like when you had to read out loud in gradeschool. You don't want that you need to make it sound as if you are just telling your friend a story about how your day went.
Props also help too. It doesn't have to be huge, in fact keeping it simple is better, but for example if you are a cat playing with a ball of yarn in your monologue having a pair of cat ears and a ball of yarn is a cute idea. I wouldn't suggest wearing a full cat suit though. Well, I know I kind of ran my mouth off here and gave you more info. than you asked for, but I hope it was helpful. GOOD LUCK!

NEVER get a monologue from a monologue book because all of the other actors who don't want to do work get them from there. Read plays (aside from shakespeare) and find your monologues. TRUST me on the monologue book/website thing. NEVER do that. The casting director will roll his/her eyes at having to hear that same monologue again.

There are great books on monologues. Go to your local library or bookstore and ask about them, almost all bookstores have them. Or you could do an online search.
