It's a military term. "Leave" is to the soldier what "vacation" is to the civilian. A member of the military earns 1.5 days of leave for every month of active duty served; that means for every month you're in the military, you've earned one and a half day's vacation. When you want to "go on vacation," you "take leave." Your leave request is done in writing and is approved by your unit commander; once this request is granted in writing, you're free to go anywhere you want and do anything you want (as long as it's legal, of course), which includes not having to stay on base or in uniform. When you've used up all of your leave, you have to return to your unit and resume work.
Having explained all that, "absent without leave" or AWOL, means that someone has not shown up for work and has not had a leave request approved in advance. AWOL status is usually not declared until the person has been gone for 24 hours; prior to that, the person is classified as having "missed a troop movement" or "missing movement," which means he/she wasn't at work when they were supposed to be. 24 hours later they're declared AWOL, and 30 days later they're classified as a deserter.
AWOL is NOT punishable by death under any circumstances; however, desertion during a time of a declared war is.

Absent without leave means that the person absent is not recieving pay from their job... for example, a teacher in my school was under arrest and investigation for having sex with students.

It means you left somewhere when you shouldn't have. For example soldiers who disappear off duty are said to have gone AWOL. In other words they were not granted leave but still took off. This term is now used in everyday situations now though so someone at work who sneaked out to the shops has gone AWOL

Absence without permission. In this case, the word "leave" is defined as "permission".
When somebody is given a "leave of absence," they are given permission to be absent.

Means you didn't show up for work in a job where you have a duty, and you didn't have permission not to show up and didn't notify anyone. This applies mainly to soldiers, but can also be said of cops or firemen.

It means you are unexcused. A person is away from his job or post without permission and generally no one knows where he is.
