I heard it on TV the other night on a sitcom and just wanted to know whether this is a fact or not...

That's more of an etiquette issue, not a crime issue. The most commonly abused scenario is people leaving the flag flying all night. If it's not taken down at sunset, then it needs to be lit up by some sort of lighting.

It is not illegal to leave the flag in the rain. In fact some of the flags made now are all-weather flags. It is just an etiquette issue. Threatening the president, however, is highly illegal. They will charge you with a terroristic threat.

I don't think it's actually a crime. The crime is when someone has so little respect for the flag that he or she leaves it out in the rain in the first place. And that's not actually an on-the-books crime; it's just a shame.

If it is made a of a rain repellent fabric it may be left out in the rain. If it is left out at night, it is supposed to have a light shining on it at all times. See the website below for flag etiquette.

No, it is not a crime.
Nor is it a crime to burn it (that's the proper way to dispose of the flag), deface it, etc., as long as it's your flag or you have permission from the owner.

burning it and leaving it out in the dark without a spotlight is, but out in the rain? i don't think! Rain is just natural and can occur anytime, so i think it is not illegal.

i dont think so.... i know burning one is but leaving it out in the rain.. it can be an accident so i highly doubt it..

no it isnt. but it is illegal to degrade the flag in anyway like burning, cutting, defaming etc etc
