to add- I have never been involved in any type of leagl activities, or those that I know who have the same problem. Just going to work, home, church, school, store...no criminal activities.

CW- I understand what you are saying, and that may be true for those in the ILLEGAL business and being very flashy about it. but I have no problem with my car..it's a simple new car, nothing fancy, gets me from point A to B.
I'll give you an ex: I was driving down the street, and almost got hit by SOMEONE who thought I was made of air (they just came from a service station and almost ran me over to get to the turning lane.) Now this cop who was on the side of the raod, and I know he saw this, decided to not pull him over for reckless driving, but followed me for almost 10 miles and only kept going because I pulled into my friends driveway-my destination.

Sorry this is just something white people do not seem to understand, and many of the answers here clearly prove that.

I come from a family with two cops and I am black, so I know both sides of the argument.

How to handle it. Never, ever get into a physical or even verb confrontation with police while out in public. Not that it is right, most of the stories of police brutally towards minorities do come from minorities egging the police on. On the one hand these are cops edge sometimes looking for a fight, on the other hand these are minorities who are tired of being pulled over no reason. But at the end of the day the cops are the ones with guns so even if they are cursing you out, you still be polite and respectful.

BUT get their badge number and name, and squad car number if you can. At least get their badge number. That way you can lodge a complaint to their superiors, the next day.

This does happen in todays society. It is sad but is a fact.

You could go to the town hall and say something. If you are not from that small town go to your relatives from where ever and see if there is some attorney that will write a letter to the head honcho and threaten a suite against the town. It may cost you a little but is not against the law. If the town you live in is as hard up for money as our little town is, it may just work. Then again it matters how little you are talking, our town is under 1000 peeps.
Replications of this is even more harassment from the law. You will have to watch your p's and q's and do everything right.
Living in small town America does have its good side but it does have it bad side as well, why we keep to ourselves.

I am sorry this is happening to you!

P.S. to your PS lol! It happens in our town all the time! One can not go to the attorneys or any judge around here for they all stick up for one another. One has to go out of town for any real change. I have a mentally disabled child (autism and health disabilities) so I know things are said about us that are not nice. I have had to go out of town to get things done...Good luck!

I don't mean to be "insensitive", but I've heard this crap before. I work in construction in CA. and work closely with many blacks and mexicans. This perception of racial profiling by cops has been the subject of heated debate at times. Oddly enough, ordinarily it's the guy with the lowered modified car with the loud exhaust and booming stereo and who speeds into the job sites that does the loudest crying. I'm not trying to say racial profiling doesn't exist, but I think that generally the cop's attention is brought to you by your own actions....black, white or yellow

With as much dignity as possible. Don't give them a reason to stop you. Stay focused on getting where you're going and seek employment and residence in a more open minded, gracious town.

I would make sure that I am not breaking any laws. That way I wouldn't have to worry about it. Then cops "following me around" may even prevent me from becoming the victim of a crime. I like having cops around. It doesn't make me paranoid, it makes me feel safer.

I'm from a small town...usually the cops watch the ones they anticipate will do the crime & people call it racing profiling...that seems to be one of the buzzwords today.

If I was in the predicament, I would be upfront with them and ask them why they are following you. Put them on blast and let them know that you don't appreciate it.
