I have two near-completed works I would like to get published. PUBLISH AMERICA looks/sounds great, but colleagues keep warning me about them. What do YOU say?

"Writer Beware has received more than 100 complaints about PublishAmerica over the past few years. One PublishAmerica author recently won a judgment in an arbitration proceeding against PublishAmerica; the difficulties he experienced are typical of the complaints we've seen."

Don't do it.

They tie you and your book up in a SEVEN year contract.

They do not do a good job of editing and this reflects on you as the author. What editing they do is not on your writing abilities, but only minimal grammar edits.

Until recently (I don't know if or when this policy is to change) they had a no return policy, therefore book stores will not purchase their books for fear they will be stuck with them.

Again this may have been or may be in the process of change, but they pay very little in royalities.

They overcharge for you books, so that the only people who will buy them are your friends and relatives (and you of course).

Though they may offer perks (as a book signing in Iceland -- no joke that's where they're main offices are located.) they will require that you pay your own expenses.

Publish America is one small step up from a vanity press or self publishing. You still pay, but its not as apparent and you still have to buy your own books and sell them out of your garage.

Publish America was establised by several writers who were frustrated by not being able to have their work published, so they started their own press... not a bad idea, but they don't really work at making it a viable option to other better, and more businesslike ventures.

Unless you're on your death bed and want to see that book in print at any costs, don't do it. (they do put out a nice looking --at least on the outside--product.)
