most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.
download firefox for free, Just have a try:

I copied this from my last answer a few minutes ago.
Try Avast! Antivirus.
http://www.avast.com/
It's free forever, and you get the whole version of the antivirus scanning software. You don't get advanced options, though, but it's nothing that is critical to your system's survival.
It receives regular updates to keep your system up-to-date all the time and it's light on the memory.
It was also voted as the best antivirus software for 2006.
I suggest, though, that along with Avast!, you also try to get an antispyware/antimalware program.

I’ve tried them all and keep going back to Norton’s. Currently I’m using Norton’s internet security 2006 and love it! I think its $70 a year for 2007.

Depending on your surfing habits. If you don’t download warez and p2p networking files such as limewire.. then AVG is okay to use. But if you download some risky files, even music audio and video files you really should go with Norton’s. AVG and the other free AV's only protect you to a point.
Best of luck!

AVG antivirus. Its totally free, and it updates itself daily. It finds viruses that Mcafee and Norton wouldn't find on my computers. You can find it at download.com just type in AVG in the search box.
