I am now three months pregnant and still have not heard my baby heart beat or had an ultra sound done yet. When I had my last ob app. I asked about an ultra sound and she said that it was to early and that they don't do their ultra sounds until 18 weeks through the pregnancy. I was about 11 weeks, she told me that I might not be able to hear anyhing yet. I don't understand why I have to wait this long cause I read on the computer that some people get ultra sounds as early as 6 weeks pregnan t and hear the heart beat.

you should be able to hear the babies heart beat at 10 weeks. They should have already put the doppler on your tummy to hear it.. It's something very beautiful... :)
they only do the ultra-sound at 6 weeks if they are not sure how far along you are.. that gives them the exact pregnancy time. If you know when your last menstrual was etc, they calculate from there.. they won't do an ultrasound just because you ask for it.. insurance won't pay for it.. besides, you will barely see anything at 6 weeks. although you could see the heart beat flow..
but to find out the gender, it's done at about 18 weeks.
if you are over 10 weeks pregnant, next time you go to doc, you should be able to hear the baby's heart beat.
good luck.

Dr.'s prefer to do only one ultrasound during pregnancy, so that's why they wait until you are a little further along. At your Dr.'s appointments she should be using the Doppler device and holding it to your stomach to hear the heartbeat. If she is, then ask her if you can hear listen to the heartbeat, most Dr.'s will let you. And don't buy one of those over the counter devices to listen to the heart beat, they don't work all that well and may even scare you into thinking there is no heartbeat.
P.S.- Please don't lie about cramping to get an ultrasound! Some people actually go out and get multiple ultrasounds, many communities have places that offer that service without a referral from a Dr., but the jury is still out on whether babies are disturbed and therefore put into distress by the sound waves bouncing around in there during an ultrasound, that's why most Dr.'s prefer to only do one during your pregnancy unless there are complications that require further monitoring.

Ultra sounds are suggested until 18-20 weeks.
But, your doctor should have a thing that looks like a microphone that they rub on your belly.
You can hear the heartbeat through that.

actually, an ultrasound can be done earlier. I am about 11 wks. pregnant and at 9 wks, I had some spotting so I went to the ER, they did an ultrasound with this long wand thing they inserted into my vagina and I saw the heartbeat on the screen! I'm not sure what the wand is called, but it can definately be done! Good luck

alot of time time doctors like to be cautious...the earlier they listen for the heartbeat..there is more of a chance you wont hear it...then you worry...all docs offices are different and practice different things..i wouldnt worry...and when they do perform your ultrasound at 18 weeks not only will you see that precious little heart beating but more then likely you w8ll be able to tell if you have a son or a daughter!!!

congrats and dont worry

Do you have the option to switch doctors? I am 18 weeks and have already had two ultrasounds. I dont think you need to worry though. Good luck and I an sure your baby is doing well!

If your that worried, go to the ER and tell them your cramping bad. You'll most likely get an ultrasound.
