I am STUNNED by how many people in this forum think it's just peachy-keen that Bush does whatever the hell he wants, regardless of the severe disapproval of the majority of the US citizens.
Sounds like some of you want a dictator instead of a president.

Yes he should, we hired him regardless of whether we voted for him or if he won the election fair and square or not. He is not the supreme, he is not the almighty, and in effect will be more ineffectual with a democratic congress. Congress holds the purse strings. Bush has veto power. It is a system of checks and balance that will finally work with a democratic majority in one or both of the houses. He will either compromise or he will get no money to do anything. His reaching out to the congress was filled with threats and if I was a congressmen I would never let him get away with what he said today. The people have spoken and he had better listen.

I think he got the message when we got our democrats into the Senate and the congress. We told him we are not happy with the way he is running the United States, But unfortunately I do not think this will make a difference to him at all. He has power in his hands and he just does not use it appropriately. Thankfully for us this will be his last term in office. And he cannot run again. That is one of the smartest things we ever did when we voted for term limits on our Presidents. That way we don't have tyrants running the United States, like that of North Korea or Cuba. All in all I guess he could be worse. All I can say is Pray He still has two more years in office.
I had to come and Edit this. because today I see he is changing Guards in Iraq. Most of the people that Voted for Bush said they did so because you do not change your Leader during war. Well. What is Bush doing. He is taking the ones out of there that knows what is going on and what would be best to do. I frankly think it is because they will not go along with HIS plan. Lord Have Mercy On Us ALL.

When he was elected, half the country voted for him. It's only recently that his approval ratings have dropped so low.

He was listening to his constituents. Just because you have an opinion doesn't mean he has to listen to you. He can only follow one viewpoint at a time. Once he's been elected, he's basically free to do what he wants subject to whether he pisses off enough people to get reelection. For Bush, this is his second term. Once he was elected, he didn't face a risk of pissing people off and losing the next coming election. There is no upcoming election for him. So, he can basically do what he wants until the end of his term.

bush doesn't do whatever he pleases -- his approval ratings are extremely low and he's essentially been defeated by the voters, who put the democrats in power in congress. the rest of his tenure as president will be a mere sideshow. bush could never be a dictator, he lacks intellect, takes his cues from others in his administration, and bows to the interests of big business. besides, the u.s. would never tolerate a dictator. a strong and reckless leader yes, but a dictator no.

I concur 100%. If Bush has listened to the public, the republicans would have maintained there majority at least in the Senate. But Bush is to spoiled and pig headed to listen to reason. Just take the Baker Commission findings. What does dubya do? Send in more troops.

A President, in order to be effective must...MUST keep the overall safety, security and future of this nation at heart. Paying attention during times of war to public opinion polls is dangerous to our military. Had we allowed the military to handle the job in VietNam, we would have seen a very different outcome I think. Public opinion polls are horribly inaccurate, favoring the views of those who sponsor them, so no, I do not think the President should pay too much attention to the polls. This is the job of the President. We grant him the authority to make decisions of national importance for us as a nation. Does it always work out? No. But then what does?

Yes a leader of a Democracy should listen to the people, they are the SERVANT of the people, it amazes me also that there are so many people who voted for him and Blair. Also what amazes me is the reaction to people who oppose or dissent against the Government, without dissent there is NO Democracy

UPDATE: Someone gave me a thumbs down? wow tough crowd

I was stunned to see the link to your poll that a majority feels that way. A dictator, no, a President, yes.

You are right. In other countries they have what they call A Vote of No Confidence if the pres. does not listen to the people. We elected him and he should do what we want. Otherwise we may as well be living in Iran.
