Checking the cervix can tell the doctor if you're dilating or effacing, but it won't help determine when you'll go into labor. Babies come when they're ready. First babies are often late, so the doctor may not want you to lose heart. If you're concerned, ask your doctor.
Oh, and congratulations! Babies are such a blessing!

You should talk to your doctor. Have you told the Dr. about the strong contractions. Have you discussed the braxton hix/ false labor? The doc. might be wanting to wait a week or so to check your cervix. You should still discuss it with him or her. Have you discussed what to do when labor starts or if it doesn't start by your date? Make sure you have all of your questions answered. Call a nurse to double check and get your answers. Everything should be okay though, dont worry too much. Still go and double check all the procedures, etc. In case of emergency and everything...

Your caregiver is taking a sensible, hands off approach!
Cervical checks really give you no useful information about when you will go into labor. It's just another way that come caregivers try to "manage" your pregnancy and birth. You can walk around for a week or more dialted 3-4 cm and 100% effaced. Or you can be closed up tight as a bank vault and have a baby a few hours later.
Also, if you lose your plug and don't go into labor, it regenerates within about 48 hours.

MY doc is the same way he never checked me at the end either. If he was worried he would let you know . But if you are really curious you can ask to be checked and he most likely will. But if you've already been having contractions you will be having the baby VERY soon! so good luck and just remember the pain will go away and it is all worth it in the end!!!

Checking your cervix might give you peace of mind, but won´t affect when your body or the baby decides it is time for birth. It will happen when it happens! If you really want to know your progress, ask your doctor to check you. During both of my pregnancies I was not checked until well into labor.

Seems they dont...maybe its a new thing.??
With my two other children (now aged 13 and 15) it seemed that doctor checked me every visit.
Now...(Im 38 weeks) this doctor has never checked at all. I guess I could ask her to...but all she does is check weight, blood pressure, baby's heartbeat, and asks how Im feeling. I guess everything must be okay.
Perhaps 'hands off' is the idea these days?

Did you call your doctor or tell your doctor about it on your last prenatal? They usually don't start checking till the very end or when you are showing signs of pre-term labor. I would call your doctor right away if you haven't discussed this with her already. If so, you need to tell your doctor you feel something is wrong and that you NEED to be seen. Better safe than sorry when it comes to your little one.

Alot of times they won't check unless you ask or complain of a specific problem...I learned quickly to tell them when I was cramping or feeling undue ammts of pressure and THEN they checked for me. I believe they do this because they don't want to disturb the natural progress of your dilating and effacing, both of which may be going on at this point...it can't hurt to ask them to check at your next appt, though.
