About ten years ago I wanted a dog. I was looking at breeders, and pet stores. I saw the dogs there, and they were flawless. They had obviously been well fed. Their coats were shinny, and they were generally well cared for. When I was at the last breeder they said something that really made me upset. They said,
"It's a wise decision to buy from a breeder. You never know what you will get from the spca, or one of those rescue organizations."

I looked at his dogs, and went home to think about one that I liked. I thought about all the animals in the spca, and how horrible their lives must have been. I thought about all the "unwanted" animals and became very upset about them being euthanized. I went to the spca the next day and adopted my dog. Her name is penny, and she is the greatest pet I have ever had. When I saw her in the spca, she was in a cage that was marked "Not available for adoption". I asked why, and they told me that she had 2 broken forelegs, and mange. She had parasites and kennel cough, and one of her eyes was infected. She was isolated from the rest of the group. I asked if there were any special circumstances that would allow me to adopt the dog, and pay for it's treatment.

I worked out with the facility that I would pay for all expenses. They repaired her two front legs, and treated her for the mange. She had antibiotic ointment applied to her eye, and was given the shots for kennel cough. She stayed at the spca for six more days, and then 2 weeks recovering and healing at my local vet. Ive not felt better about a decision since.

We always adopt our pets from the local animal shelter. Sometimes they have abandonment issues and are skittish because they have been abused, but they have always turned out to be great pets once they get into a loving home. I love my mutts!!! My uncle also adopted a hurricane dog last year, she is such a sweetie. Nice to see her in a good family instead of homeless somewhere.

I have adopted a cat who was abused and so nervous we call her Jumpy (or jumps)..after 2 years of fuss and attention she orders everyone around. Tells everyone off and is the biggest charchter in the house.

I also spent most of the money I saved for christmas on her vet bill (she started scratching lumps out of herself - after another cat attacked her the week before christmas).

When I was 6 my sister and I found a bird with a broken wing on the ground. We took a bucket and scooped it into it then we went and told our parents what we had found and they took us to a local animal shelter who nursed it back to health and released it. It felt really good to help the bird.

the last thing i've done is removed a gumnut that was wedged in my dog's paw. she's such a drama queen. she's an ex-racing greyhound.. so she wasn't put down along with the thousands of other greyhounds that are killed each year. she was a spur of the moment decision 3 years ago~!
