Calculate the molar mass of the empirical formula. This should be a multiple of the molar mass given for the compound,. For example: empirical formula CH molar mass of empirical formula = 13 molar mass of compound = 78 this is a multiple of 6 times the empirical formula mass so we have to multiply the empirical formula by 6 and get C6H6, the molecular formula for benzene. The multiple might be 1, for example for formaldehyde the empirical formula is CH2O and the molar mass is 30. The mass of the empirical formula is also 30 so that means in this case the empirical formula and the molecular formula are the same.
