It's normal for some coolant to go to the tank when it gets hot. If a lot of coolant is getting forced out, it's either boiling or a blown head gasket is letting exhaust into the water jacket. It can boil if you've lost pressure in the system, the radiator is clogged, the engine is putting out too much heat for some reason or the water pump isn't pumping like it should.

It is normal for coolant to be forced back into the resivoir when the vehicle heats up (it is designed to avoid building up too much pressure without "losing" coolant) so you don't blow your freeze plugs.

If your car is running "Hot" you may need to replace your thermostat. This device is designed to open at a certain temperature and allow "fresh" coolant from the radiator into the engine block. They wear out over time, and stop allowing coolant through causing the engine to overheat.

When it's cool make sure the radiator if full. If so it could be a stuck thermostat, clogged radiator or blown head gasket.

Sounds to me like a water pump problem.
