Of course they are. Look at the way Chicago banned foie gras. The problem is that we constantly re-elect people for this, since we just know that they MUST have our best interests in mind. The insurance industry makes a killing on this as a result, since it only benefits them. Some would argue this, saying that this improves our lives... I totally disagree. When you can't use salt on your food, when you cannot skate without full pads, when smoking is not YOUR choice anymore, when THERE IS NO RISK, are you really living anymore?
I do not want to live in some protectionist's idea of paradise. I fully intend to eat things that are bad for me, jump out of an airplane if I want to, and live in an "unsafe" manner. That is living!

I feel your pain, got a ticket for no seatbelt, $75, Seatbelts do save lives, thats fact. Helmets save lives as well, if the accident isn't to bad. Even a very minor accident without one can kill you.The one about the trans fat seems a little wierd. I figured law inforcement helped with the seatbelt and helmet laws. Thye got fed up with writeing up doa's on people when it could have been avoided.

Left alone, the government will be a completely totalarian soon, telling it's "subjects" (not citizens anymore) what they can do, cannot do, when they can do what is allowed, under what circumstances allowed activities can be enjoyed and when.
I don't like fat people. Yeah, I'm prejudiced but I refuse to join the politically correct. I believe freedom should be every American's right. If you cannot stop eating when full, it is my right to dislike being around you but I do not have the right to tell you how much or what to eat.
If I want to drive without seat belts, it's my decision. I do not need a nanny government telling me what is good for me. Instead, the citizens should be telling the government how to act, not the other way around.

Well, I have to agree with you. Busting drug pushers performs a service, but ticketing people who aren't wearing a seat belt is just being a nanny. As you point out, they aren't risking the lives of others, just their own.
Frankly, I think a key reason for these occasional crack-downs on wearing seatbelts ("Click It or Ticket") is that it's a low risk way to generate revenue. Not many folks getting a ticket for this are going to offer resistance.

Knowledge shall set you free! But, I don't want to pay for your stupidity. Don't you realize that seat belts save lives and prevent injury? Helmets do much the same thing as seat belts. Trans fats are harmful to your health, as are smoking and drugs.
It is a proven fact that health care costs are driven up by people who abuse these laws, and usually it is the tax payer who must accept the burden, because the dumb @ss who doesn't wear a helmet will probably be brain dead for the next twenty five years. Someone, besides himself is left to clean up after him. No thanks! Wipe your own butt!

What you don't understand . . .
. . . is that government doesn't have the authority to create laws that govern the people. The laws created by government (public servants) are to be obeyed by creations of the government.
You are only obligated to obey victimless laws because you have taken a slave surveilance number. (your warehouse number, aka "Social Security Number").
You quite literally "belong" to the creditors who own the US. Yes, I said belong as in "OWN". They actually and really OWN you!
What do you think our national debt is, an unsecured loan? FDR pledged the "full faith and credit of the American people" against the International banksters loans.
Haven't you ever noticed that when the government sends you a letter, they never spell your name in upper and lower case letters? They address you by your "fiction" name. It's a name they made up for you (usually the middle name is omitted in favor of an initial).
If you accept that you are that "person", you have to obey the laws they create. Especially if you have agreed to receive benefits from them in the form of Social Security benefits.
Now be a good little girl and do what they say so they can protect their interests (your earning power) by keeping you safe from those nasty trans fats.

I strongly believe that it is a violation of our human rights to force us to do things 'for our own good'. We are adults and we should be free to choose how we live our life. All this nonsense of forcing people to live by other's rules, and it really isn't always the government' simply makes people less self reliant and adds financial burdens that we do not need.
So long as you are not harming another person you have the right to do whatever you wish with your own body, it is yours. That includes drugs, prostitution, alcohol, tobacco, extreme sports and so on. The only limitation is that you do not have the right to harm another person.
