By the way, in all countries that use the metric system, the word is spelt "metre". A "metre" is a unit of measurement; a "meter" is an instrument for measuring. So we get kilometre and centimetre but thermometer and barometer. It is a useful distinction that is worth preserving.

When the USA finally adopts the metric system it should adopt the correct spelling at the same time.
