"After the accession of Catharine de Medicis to power, France and Spain drew closer the bonds of amity which had previously subsisted between the two countries; but the refusal of Catharine to adopt Philip's plan for the wholesale slaughter of heretics, produced a coolness in their relations. However, when Henry, King of Navarre, a Huguenot, became heir-presumptive to the throne, Philip allied himself with the Guises and other chiefs of the Catholic party who were in rebellion, and his obstinate persistence in these intrigues after the cause of the Guises was shown to be hopeless, prompted Henry to declare war against him. The Spaniards had the worst of it, and Philip was glad to conclude the treaty of Veroins (May 2nd, 1598). He died in the Escurial at Madrid, September 13th of the same year."

France and Spain had always been allies but when Catharine de Medici came to power they became even closer. However when Catharine refused to kill heretics in the same numbers as Philip relations cooled. When Henri of Navarre, (Henri IV of France)who was a Protestant, became the next in line to the throne Philip opposed him and supported his enemies, the Guises and the Catholic Party, even though it became obvious they were never going to remove Henry. Henry declared war in Spain and won many battles quickly so Philip had to sign a peace treaty.

I love European History!

France and Spain we're good pals when Catherine from the reknown Italian noble family the Medicis gained power. However, Phil of Spain wanted to execute all heretics and Cath said no way. So France nd Spain begin to seperate. Spain wants to be alone and Fr sides with Cath's in Italy, however France is moving towards a protestant view at this point in time whilst Spain and Italy are both Catholic. Henry of Navarre got the French throne, and essentially made Phil in Spain even more frustrated because Henry completly disagreed with most Spainsh policies. Henry ( Protestant France) decralres war on Spain (catholic), they fight until 1598 with the resolution of the treaty of Veroins. Phillip dies later that year, still not having really "won" anything

Catherine de Medici became queen of France. This should have improved relations between France and Spain, but Catherine's refusal to kill heretics (relegious non-conformists--Protestants, in this case) got in the way. Henry, king of Navarre (later known as Henry IV) was a Huguenot (French Protestant). When it became clear that Henry was going to be crowned king of France, Philip (Philip II, king of Spain) allied himself with the Guises (a powerful--and VERY Catholic--noble family from eastern France) and other rebel Catholic nobles in France. They tried to take down Henry, but failed. This all ticked off Henry in a big way, so he declared war on Spain. The French gave the Spaniards a serious beating, forcing Philip to sign the Treaty of Vervins on May 2, 1598 (which ordered Philip to remove all his troops from French territory, and to stop supporting Catholic nobles in France). Philip died in the Escurial (a monestary) in Madrid on September 13, 1598.

After C de M came to power, France and Spain became friendlier, as they had been in the past, but C's refusal to kill any non-Roman-Catholics caused a cooling. Then, when Henry, a Protestant, became the next heir to the throne, Philip befriended the Catholic Guise family, but this proved to be a useless. This failure encouraged Henry to declare war against Philip. Philip's side lost and the wars it ended in a treaty. etc

When Catharine became boss, France and Spain grew closer in friendship, but Catharine dissed Phil's plan for murdering non-believers so they kinda stopped getting along. But, when Henry became next in line for boss, Phil hooked up with the Catholics who were not currently playing along together. His stubborn support of them even after it appeared to be a waste of time, caused Henry to declare war against him. Spain got beat the worst and Phil was happy to sign on the dotted line. He died in Spain that year.
