Mina is wrong they were somewhat like the KKK though nowhere near as large. My Uncles Insurance office on Telegraph ave. in Oakland was shot up by them after he refused to donate to them and pay their "Protection" money. I knew Huey Newton and he was a regular scum sucking, misogynistic, drug dealer. I lived throught the 60's in Oakland and trust me I know what I am talking about. The press loved them, wonderful photo-ops,and the husband of a good friends Mother wote the only authorized book about them. His name is Gene Marine and he was an editor at Ramparts Magazine a left-wing socialist rag unfit for anything but lining a bird cage.

Minas "Teachers" need a history lesson....

Here it is 8 hours later and NO response to my post, this should tell you something, given the provocative nature of your original question compared to like hot-button questions.

The left NEVER has an intelligent response to facts, they only have emotional ones. Never comes a sugggestion to remedy a given situation. Just comes lies and noise.

Its a black racist organization.. It's on about the same level as the KKK just with the tables turned the opposite direction...It was pretty much faded out by the 70's..Google it and I am sure you can find more than you ever wanted to know on the subject.

To answer Mina below yes they did do some some good things but so do other race based organizations. The panthers were also affiliated with the Black Muslim movement which is Malcolm X and Farrakan etc.

The Black Panthers were a civil rights and self-defense organization that encouraged violence. They wore black leather jackets and black berets and carried weapons openly. They started in Oakland and were founded by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. They did a lot of good for the black community and had after-school programs for kids to keep them safe and fed. They're really interesting, you should look into them.
And don't listen to the guy above, they were NOTHING like the KKK and I think it's racist for him to even suggest that.
