The vanishing hitchhiker is a popular scary urban legend. Basically, the story is that someone picks up a hitchhiker on the road at night, and somewhere along the line the hitchhiker disappears. It turns out she was actually a ghost who had died on that road years ago.
A well-respected source for urban legend research is Snopes.com It usually provides lots of background and history about the stories.
