I'm a teacher and, as yet, I have never shouted. You can achieve the same effect by speaking in a quiet, controlled, stern voice. If you shout, the kids (teenagers) find it funny; it makes it seem like you have lost control and sends the message that they are being 'naughty', which makes them think 'what've I got to lose by continuing to behave in a naughty manner if I am already'. A stare and a threat normally does the trick. I would only shout to warn someone, or to stop a potentially dangerous situation. Teaching 25 hours a week, if you shout all the time you'd have no voice left!

Parents who have instilled in their children that education is important and classroom skills such as listening, not talking, when the instructor is speaking is good manners are out numbered by the parents who tell their kids to go to school and then do not have any other contact with their kids or the school.
Teachers try their best to instill a sense of good conduct, manners, and learning skills into all students that they teach, but if these are not reinforced at home then it goes for naught most of the time. Parents need to realize that even though kids more time at school than at home, kids need to hear the same message from both spheres of influence and that the home, not the school will have more influence on the kids. Children not disciplined at home will expect the same at school!
Teachers shout out of this frustation that kids act up at school and to get their attention shouting is sometimes the only thing that works!

I am a teacher/counselor who never shouts at students. If the students are being loud, I usually say something like "Excuse me!!!", then I wait quietly till they regain quiet. That works for me. Some teachers flip the lights on and off a few times to get their students' attention again. There are MANY methods of class control without shouting at the students. I'd think your teacher is rather inexperienced in classroom control or very young at their teaching skills. These are signals the students learn quickly. It is like counting to three when raising little children.

I'm a teacher who never shouts. I just talk in my normal quiet voice. In return, I ask my students to do the same in my classroom. Shouting is rude... unless you are a cheerleader at a play-off game or a hog caller.

because they get irritated with their students, i'm an inspiring teacher and i was recently in a classroom working with a teacher, and sometimes the students just dont do what they are told, and you get really annoyed, it comes to a point where you just take it anymore; thats when teachers shout

good teachers don't shout.
If your teacher shouts a lot then I'd talk to him about it, and your parents, and the head

adam-how dare you say that about teachers! they are not 'stupid' and if you think they are then that makes you ignorant and ill-informed. to answer the question- teachers sometimes raise voice to get attention, i often end up hoarse because ive raised my voice-not actually shouted

They shout because people can't hear them if they are talking or that they want attention. Another reason could be is that they are angry at someone.

They call it 'classroom management'. its an old fashioned method of behaviour management. A little like smaking a toddler to teach it right from wrong. Also it makes teachers feel BIG, and gain admaration from other idiot teachers. In realitiy it is child abuse and is not acceptable in any other role whereby a child is in your care. Shouting at a child is PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE. Teachers know nothing about child protection, and are poorly educated on this matter considering their role.
