Hard to offer any options with limited knowledge of area, climate etc.

However, if you live in an area that doesn't gt snow or frosts during winter I would go for a gardenia. They don't grow too big and the fragrance that comes from their flowers as you walk past is incredible.

If you do get frosts or snow I would suggest a viburnum of some description. They usually have very a proliferation of white flowers in spring and remain green and bushy year round.

There are literally thousands of possibilities. Here are some questions to ask youself to narrow down your choices:

Where in the country do you live? Minnesota? Florida? You need a plant that will grow well in your climate.

What are the condtions outside your door? Is it sunny all day long? Does the sun really bake the area on summer afternoons? Or is it in deep deep shade? Or is it sunny in the morning, or just in the afternoon? This really affects what will grow well. Are there strong winds that batter the area?

What is the soil like? Is it really soggy all the time, or when it rains? Does rain pour off the roof and gouge out the soil in the area? Is the soil sandy or heavy clay or like concrete?

How much maintenance are you willing to perform? Do you want something that never needs trimming, or do you like to get out and garden? Are you willing to trim a bit every so often, or do you want something that will need no care whatsoever? If you like flowers, being willing to trim every so often is important. If you want a purely "hands off" type of plant, you may need to settle for a foliage only plant. Keep in mind, however, that a once-yearly clean up, will always help.

Is the area irrigated? Or does your area get sufficient rainfall year round?

Once you answer these questions, take the answers to any local nursery, and see what they have that will fit your conditions. These questions should help you "get it right the first time".

You can't go wrong with a cactus. It needs little maintenance and it deters unwanted guests, they are great for planting beneath the windows.

Is it sunny or shady there? Will it be in a pot or in the ground. And where do you live?
