Reboot a couple times if you haven't. Try restore or use your backup if need be. I use Norton Ghost to make a back up image of my C drive to an E drive partition I set up using Norton Partition Magic. Then you always have an exact replica of your C drive on the E (image) drive to fully restore your computer. Hope there's not a virus out there erasing desktops. It happened to me too, but a reboot fixed it.

PS I think it may have something to do with the new IE7 like the person above said.

with your mouse "right click start"
click on properties,
click on taskbar tab
and make sure that the Auto Hide Taskbar is unchecked,
"that means that there is no tick in the box"
if that fails then you might consider this option.

FIRST RUN YOUR ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE TO TRY AND DELETE ANY UNWANTED INFECTION'S.

TO RESET YOUR PC TO FACTORY SETTINGS
Before you try using the system recovery program I would suggest using system restore:
if software on you hard drive accidentally gets erased or damaged, first use Microsoft system restore to return the computer's settings to a selected restore point without affecting user programs or document files. " However "
when other methods of repairing your system software fail then you may want to use the system recovery program as a last resort to reinstall software.

WARNING SYSTEM RECOVERY WILL DELETE ANY DATA OR PROGRAM THAT YOU INSTALLED AFTER PURCHASE,
BE SURE TO BACK UP ANY DATA THAT YOU WANT TO KEEP ON A REMOVABLE DISC

1.Disconnect any devices, like printer, scanner, webcam,
Except the monitor, keyboard, mouse
1. click start on the task bar
2. choose all programs
3. choose PC tools
and then click system recovery
4. wait until the system recovery box appears asking do you really want to start PC system recovery,, click yes
follow on screen instructions.
5.complete the computer start-up and finish the registration process, then reconnect all devices.
good luck.

There are 2 things you can do:

1) Use the task manager to open a program by clicking on New Task

2) Use the system restore feature to take your system back to an earlier time. To do this:

1) Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore
2) Follow the instructions provided by System Restore to go back in time....

It is always better to depend on system restore so that un- identified errors are undone with out affecting the basic operating system. I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html
The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at

a common virus Known as Brontok (win32) attatches itself to the
files in the registry of your computer and when it is being deleted (not healed) by an anti-virus those files from the registry are also deleted creating the problems that you have the best thing is either to Reinstall XP or Repair it
but make sure you Back up your Files (and More essentially your Drivers in your System 32 folder if you cannot find your restore
disk)

This is due to a virus that Norton really should have detected. Use task manager to run "explorer.exe" then update Norton and run a full system scan. Then do a system restore, as mentioned before, to put explore.exe back where it should be.

If this doesn't work, go to:

hti your windows Key...if the Start menu pops up then you simply have your taskbar hidden...if not....

From task manager start a new task "Explorer.exe" that should bring your taskbar back....

After you have done this...do a system restore...if that doesnt work...backup everything you want to keep...and start over....

You'd be best to go into system tools and do a system restore to a day when it worked okay

Get rid of Norton I did. Microsoft has all the security you need for free if your copy of windows was bought by you. Sounds like you switched to IE7, the all new, safer, blah, blah, blah. Switch back to IE6, I did, & I think you'll be just fine. IE7 seems to have a lot of problems & everyone I know who tried it had problems.
