52 million people lost lives as a result of the 2nd World War - if you compare that to the amount of nips that copped it when the two big bombs were dropped, it ain't very much is it?
This is for S P - you're having a laugh - you rednecks couldn't hit a barn door with an elephant. The USA killed more British soldiers in the Gulf war, than Saddam did. Wake up and smell the beans Bubba.

I take it you mean the USA-----on Japan, in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I thought of this answer before I even read the last part about being a defender country.
It was not an insane thing, tho----it saved so many lives by ending the war sooner.

The USA used nuclear weapons on Japanese civilians in World War II, but that doesn't mean they were insane to do so. If the question was as you phrased it above, then the answer is "Nobody".

You know the answer and your point is moot without any background to it. The Japanese frame of mind at that time was not one that brought up civilians but taught warfare to all citizens starting in young children. It would have been impossible to dechiper who the individual enemy was, especially while facing attack from each coast.

Ah yes, of course, the Americans.
The ones who have an airforce that prides itself on only using precision bombing in WWII, and only hitting the factories/rail heads/ airfields etc of Germany and never ever ever the civillians. Not like those nasty Britishers with their area tactics bombing the workers, thats a war crime!

The USA, as others have said. A horrible thing, but at the time it was considered the only alternative to end the war.

It's interesting to note that everyone who thinks it was insane to use the atomic bombs on Japan were not scheduled to be in the assault wave for Operation Olympic.
